The ambulance cries for its way
among a curious and helpless traffic.
I sit beside her
my last night’s coquettish partner
now lies still and pale
as if in another empty time
with just no baggage.
In no time
strangers swarm into the ambulance
the hospital staff
whisk her away from me
I see her eyes fluttering for seconds
the impact of all that movements
do little else to her adamant repose.
There’s nothing a man can do here
but stand like a dazed fool
near the intensive care unit
medication or surgery
what do they care
What they do to her
my love and tomorrows shall always bear.
